200A Panel Upgrade and Outdoor Disconnect in Concord, NC

Our Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, completed a comprehensive 200A electrical service upgrade for a home in Concord, NC. On July 23, 2025, technician Christian Cedillos upgraded the main indoor panel to current code, installed a new 200A outdoor service disconnect, replaced multiple breakers, and added whole-home surge protection.

Project Overview

This Panels & Service Upgrades project focused on safety, reliability, and code compliance. We replaced the indoor 200A aluminum main panel, properly grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and neatly reconnected and labeled existing branch circuits. As part of the upgrade, we installed a 200A exterior service disconnect to align with current code practices and improve emergency shutoff accessibility.

Permitting and inspection were included, and as power was temporarily disconnected during the work, Touchstone Electric made a generator available for limited power use to minimize disruption for the homeowner.

Safety and Code Compliance

The installation was completed to current electrical code, including proper grounding and bonding practices. With the outdoor disconnect serving as the service disconnecting means, neutrals and grounds are handled correctly between the disconnect and the indoor panel. As inspectors implement NEC 2020, some projects may require upgrading certain circuits to AFCI protection. In homes with preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals, AFCI additions can reveal issues that may require diagnostic time to resolve. Our team is prepared to address these findings as needed.

To safeguard the home’s sensitive electronics, we installed a whole-home surge protector with a $10,000 warranty included with the panel upgrade. The main panel also carries a 20-year transferrable warranty.

Breakers Replaced During the Upgrade

To match the home’s loads and improve reliability, we replaced and organized multiple breakers, including:

  • 2 × 40A standard breakers (typical for large appliances such as dryers or condensers)
  • 1 × 50A standard breaker (often used for ranges or small subpanels)
  • 1 × 30A standard double-pole breaker
  • 1 × 25A standard double-pole breaker (common for small condensers or mini-splits)
  • 6 × 20A standard breakers (small appliance and general-use circuits)
  • 6 × 15A standard breakers (lighting and standard branch circuits)

Existing circuits were tested, re-landed, and clearly labeled for future serviceability.

200A Outdoor Service Disconnect

We installed a code-compliant 200A exterior disconnect to provide a readily accessible means to shut off power. This configuration ensures proper separation of neutrals and grounds between the disconnect and the interior panel. Our team handled the utility coordination for power shutoff and reinstatement, as well as the permitting and inspection process.
