Project overview

Touchstone Electric’s Hendersonville branch completed a comprehensive 200A service and panel upgrade for a home in Candler, NC. Led by technicians Brian Cain and Theo Coetsee, this Panels & Service Upgrades project brought the property’s electrical system up to current code, expanded capacity for future needs, and added multiple layers of surge and GFCI protection. Completed on January 23, 2024, the work also included new power to outbuildings and targeted repairs to improve everyday safety and reliability.

We’re proud to share that Brian Campbell praised our team with a positive review following the project.

What we upgraded and installed

  • 200A main panel replacement: Installed a modern 40/80‑space 200A panel, properly grounded and bonded. All existing circuits were reconnected, the panel was neatly labeled, and the system was amp-tested.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Added a panel-mounted surge protector to safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances from utility and storm-related surges.
  • New meter base and service conductors: Upgraded the meter to 200A and replaced service wiring as part of the service modernization, aligned with utility and code requirements.
  • Grounding system: Installed a code-compliant grounding electrode system to enhance fault protection and overall system safety.
  • Garage subpanel: Installed a dedicated subpanel to organize branch circuits and support present and future loads in the garage.
  • Crawl space circuits and outlets: Added two circuits and four outlets with GFCI protection to improve accessibility and safety for maintenance and storage needs.
  • Outdoor barn power: Trench-cut approximately 100 feet at 12 inches, installed 1" PVC conduit and 12/2 cable, reconnected the barn’s electrical, and verified safe operation.
  • Small shed upgrades: Installed a GFCI receptacle, switch, interior light, wiring, and trenched/backfilled for the new feeder as needed.
  • Bathroom ventilation: Mounted four customer-supplied exhaust fans and provided new switches and circuit extensions to ensure proper, code-compliant operation.
  • Generator readiness: Installed a 30A outdoor generator inlet and a main-breaker lockout kit to enable safe backup-power connection during outages.
  • Repairs and improvements: Repaired an exterior garage outlet; added a new GFCI with box, cover, and conduit on the back deck; secured a floor outlet with a proper cover and tested two additional floor outlets in the family room.
  • Protective breakers: Installed GFCI/AFCI combo protection where appropriate to reduce shock and arc-fault risks.
  • Permitting and inspection: Filed the electrical permit and coordinated inspection. The utility power drop was scheduled as part of the service upgrade process.

Safety, compliance, and testing

This Electrical Panel Upgrade was performed to current NEC and local code standards. Our team completed amp testing on critical circuits, verified proper grounding and bonding, and labeled the new panel for clarity. With new surge protection and targeted GFCI/AFCI coverage, the home now benefits from better protection against surges, arcing, and shock hazards.

For service upgrades of this scope, a brief planned outage is typical while the meter and service conductors are transitioned. We coordinated timing to minimize disruption and ensured safe restoration of power after inspection.
