200A Electrical Panel & Meter Base Upgrade in East Flat Rock, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team, based out of our Hendersonville branch, completed a fully permitted and inspected 200-amp service upgrade for a homeowner in East Flat Rock. Led by technician Jose Rodriguez, the project included a new 200A meter/panel combo, a new service riser with weatherhead, targeted rewiring with NM-B 14/2, and fresh fixture and switch installations. Completion date: June 17, 2025.
Project overview
For homeowner Curt Watkins, we modernized the home’s electrical service and improved everyday comfort. The scope covered a 200A panel and meter upgrade, replacement riser, bath exhaust fan light combo, a porch ceiling fan, standard switches, and new Romex runs. We performed selective rewiring, safely de-energized the home to transition circuits, and wrapped with thorough testing and inspection.
What we installed
- 200A meter/panel combo (over/under, feed-through lugs): We coordinated the power drop with the utility, set the new combo assembly, and installed ground rods with grounding electrode conductors to ensure a solid, code-compliant grounding system.
- Service riser with weatherhead: Installed new IMC conduit from the meter location to the weatherhead, including proper strapping and a roof boot for a clean, weather-tight seal at the service entrance.
- Targeted rewiring and new NM-B 14/2 runs: Fished new cable where needed, set junction boxes as required, reconnected devices, and verified polarity, continuity, and function across affected circuits.
- Bathroom exhaust fan light combo: Removed the outdated housing, adjusted the drywall opening, reworked existing duct connection, and tied into the existing power for improved ventilation and lighting.
- Porch ceiling fan and lighting fixtures: Installed customer-supplied fixtures on existing boxes/circuits for better airflow and comfort outdoors.
- Standard switches: Installed new switches (2-way/3-way as needed) for convenient, reliable control of the updated fixtures.
- Testing and cleanup: Re-energized the system, tested devices and switches, and left the work area tidy.
Permits, inspection, and code notes
All work was permitted, scheduled, and inspected in accordance with local requirements for East Flat Rock, NC. We handled utility coordination for the service upgrade to minimize downtime and ensure a smooth cutover.
- NEC 2020 considerations: Inspectors may require certain circuits to be protected with AFCI breakers. In homes with preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals, AFCI can trip immediately and may require additional diagnostics to resolve.
Local benefits for East Flat Rock homeowners
- Capacity and reliability: A 200A service provides room for present needs and future additions like HVAC upgrades, EV charging, or workshop circuits.
- Safety and durability: Updated grounding and a new riser/weatherhead improve fault clearing and weather resistance.
- Comfort and ventilation: A new bath fan removes humidity more effectively, and a porch fan increases outdoor comfort.
- Clean, professional finish: Proper cable routing, secure supports, and labeled terminations aid future service and inspections.
Technician and customer experience
Jose Rodriguez led the installation with clear communication and attention to detail from start to finish. Following completion, Curt Watkins praised our team in a review, recognizing the careful workmanship and organized process.
