200A Electrical Panel & Meter Base Upgrade in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a comprehensive 200-amp service upgrade for Mr. Blake in Charlotte, NC on October 30, 2024. Led by our technician Gump Martin, this project replaced the aging main panel, upgraded the meter base, added new grounding, and installed a balanced set of AFCI, GFCI, and standard breakers to meet current code and deliver safer, more reliable power.
Handled by our Matthews branch serving the greater Charlotte area, the work included permitting, coordination with the utility for a safe outage, and inspection—so the homeowner had a seamless, code-compliant upgrade from start to finish.
What We Upgraded
- 200A Outdoor Main Panel (Aluminum): Replaced the existing panel, grounded and bonded the cabinet, labeled circuits, and reconnected the service entrance and existing branch circuits. This panel includes a 20-year transferrable warranty and an integrated surge protector with a $10k connected equipment warranty.
- 200A Meter Base: Coordinated utility power drop, pulled permits, installed the new meter base, and connected new grounding electrode conductors for a complete and durable service entrance upgrade.
- New Grounding System: Drove ground rods and tied them into the service equipment with properly sized and clamped grounding electrode conductors for stable fault paths and improved safety.
- Breaker Replacements & Additions:
- Five 15A AFCI breakers for living areas, bedrooms, and other required locations.
- Two 15A GFCI breakers for kitchen and exterior/utility areas.
- Standard breakers for small appliances and major equipment: six 20A, three 30A double-pole, one 25A double-pole, and one 50A for high-demand loads.
- Select New Wiring: Installed NM-B 12/2 for branch-circuit updates and THHN 4/0 conductors where needed for feeders/service conductors.
Safety, Code, and Performance Benefits
- More capacity and headroom: A modern 200-amp service supports today’s appliances, HVAC, EV charging, and future upgrades without frequent tripping.
- Modern protection: AFCI and GFCI breakers enhance safety against arc faults and ground faults where required by current code.
- Robust grounding and bonding: New ground rods and conductors establish a dependable path for fault currents and lightning surges.
- Clean labeling and organization: Clearly identified circuits make future maintenance and troubleshooting easier and safer.
As inspectors in Charlotte, NC continue adopting newer NEC requirements, certain areas may require AFCI protection. We verify compatibility and inform homeowners that long-standing wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping and may require targeted diagnostics to resolve.
Permitting, Utility Coordination, and Inspection
For this Charlotte project, our team obtained the required electrical permit, coordinated the temporary power shut-off with the utility, and scheduled inspection. When an outage is necessary, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available upon request for limited power during the work window. The result is a fully permitted, inspected, and code-compliant service upgrade that the homeowner can trust.
