Comprehensive 200 Amp Service Upgrade in Gastonia, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a full 200A service upgrade and panel replacement for MUSE Residential in Gastonia, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop from our Charlotte business unit (Matthews branch), the project was finished on September 11, 2025 with permits and inspections to bring the home’s electrical system up to current code.

This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services and was designed to increase capacity, improve safety, and prepare the property for modern electrical demand.

Project Highlights

  • New 200A meter/panel combo: We coordinated the utility power drop, handled permitting, and installed a new combo unit with grounding upgrades.
  • Indoor 200A main panel (aluminum): Brought to current code, grounded and bonded, circuits reconnected, and a labeled panel directory provided.
  • Surge protection included: The installation includes a $10k warranty surge protector for added protection.
  • Breaker updates: Installed a balanced mix of standard breakers to support existing and future loads.
  • Grounding enhancements: New ground rod and continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) installed to the main service panel.
  • Service entrance wiring: Installed 15 ft of 4/0 SER (4-wire) from the main panel to a subpanel.
  • Panel relocation evaluated: A relocation was considered but not completed; a custom discount was applied accordingly.

What We Installed

  • Meter/Panel Combo – 200A: Utility coordination, permits, installation, ground rods, and GEC included.
  • Main Panel – 200A Aluminum (indoor): Grounded, bonded, reconnected service entrance and existing circuits, with inspection. Includes a 20-year transferable panel warranty (note: our copper panel option carries a 50-year warranty).
  • Breakers:
    • 4 × 15A standard (bathroom lights and standard branch circuits)
    • 4 × 20A standard (small appliance circuits)
    • 2 × 30A double-pole (dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
    • 1 × 50A standard (range, furnace/heat, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
  • Ground Rods Upgrade: Driven rod with a continuous GEC run to the main service panel.
  • Service Entrance Cable: 15 ft SER 4/0 (4-wire) from the main panel to a subpanel.

Note: If required by the local inspector under NEC 2020 adoption, certain branch circuits may need AFCI breaker upgrades. Preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping and may require diagnostic time to resolve.

Why Upgrade to 200 Amps?

A 200A service provides the headroom modern homes need for high-demand appliances and future additions like EV charging, HVAC, and kitchen upgrades. This project in Gastonia improves reliability, reduces overload risk, and delivers a clearly labeled, code-compliant panel for safer maintenance.

Our Process for Gastonia Homeowners

  • Planning and permits: We handle permitting, coordinate utility power shutoff/restore, and schedule inspections.
  • Outage planning: Power is temporarily disconnected during the changeover. At the customer’s request, we can provide a generator for limited power usage during the outage.
  • Clean, labeled finish: Circuits are reconnected and labeled, grounding is verified, and the system is bonded to code.

Touchstone Electric serves Gastonia, NC from our Matthews-based Charlotte branch, delivering expert electrical panel upgrades and full service upgrades for homeowners looking for safe, scalable power.

Results You Can Count On

The home now features a modern 200A backbone, upgraded grounding, and a balanced breaker layout to support both everyday use and future expansion. While a panel relocation was initially scoped, it was ultimately not required, and a discount was applied. The finished installation provides safer operation, better surge protection, and long-term peace of mind.
