Project overview in Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte branch completed a full 200 amp service upgrade and new panel installation for homeowner Jennifer Vonderheide in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project modernized the home’s electrical service, increased available capacity, and added a safe, simple generator connection for dependable backup power. Completion date: July 8, 2025.

What we installed

  • 200A meter/panel combo: We pulled permits, coordinated the utility power drop and reconnection, installed the new meter/panel combination, and upgraded grounding with properly bonded grounding electrode conductors and ground rods. A new service head (weatherhead) and riser were included to protect conductors and meet current standards.
  • 200A indoor subpanel with four-wire system: A dedicated 4‑wire feeder was run to the new 200A subpanel, separating neutrals and grounds for improved safety and code compliance. We used appropriately sized conductors and 2-inch PVC conduit where required.
  • Breaker updates and labeling: We installed a mix of new breakers to support dedicated loads and general-purpose circuits, including 15A lighting/branch circuits, 20A small-appliance circuits, 30A double‑pole breakers for larger equipment, and a 40A breaker where needed. All work included clear circuit labeling for easier future service.
  • Generator inlet with interlock (manual transfer): To enable safe backup power, we reconfigured the panel layout to locate the new generator breaker in the correct position and installed an interlock kit on the panel face. From the panel, we ran up to 15 ft of feeder to a mounted generator inlet and provided a 15 ft whip for quick connection during outages. This setup includes a 50A breaker and panel stickers to guide operation.

Throughout the upgrade, our team followed best practices for terminations, torqueing, anti-oxidant application on aluminum conductors where applicable, and thorough cleanup inside the panel.

Code, safety, and inspection notes

As local inspectors continue to adopt NEC 2020 requirements, some homes are asked to upgrade specific branch circuits to AFCI protection. In certain cases, preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can require additional diagnosis and correction when AFCI breakers are introduced. Our team advises homeowners during inspection to ensure a safe, compliant result.

The new four-wire feeder and separation of neutrals/grounds in the subpanel bring the system in line with modern standards and reduce nuisance issues, while upgraded grounding enhances fault clearing and overall protection.

Why a 200A upgrade was the right choice

  • More capacity: Supports present and future loads like EV chargers, heat pumps, hot tubs, or a renovated kitchen without overtaxing the system.
  • Improved reliability: New equipment, fresh terminations, and correct panel organization reduce tripping and hot spots.
  • Safer operation: Proper grounding, bonding, and a modern four‑wire distribution path help protect people and property.
  • Ready for outages: Interlock and inlet make running a portable generator straightforward and safe.
