200 Amp Panel Upgrade, Surge Protection & Grounding in Raleigh, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade for Brett Fox on September 22, 2025. Led by technician Cody Perry, this project replaced the home’s main service equipment with a code-compliant 200 amp aluminum-bus panel, added a whole-home surge protector with $50k coverage and a 10-year warranty, and upgraded the grounding and bonding system. All work is backed by our lifetime craftsmanship warranty.
Scope of Work Completed
- 200A Main Panel (Aluminum Bus, Indoor): Brought the service to current electrical code, replaced the panel and main lug, labeled every circuit, and reconnected the service entrance and existing branch circuits. We fully grounded and bonded the new panel. Permitting and inspection were included, and a generator was made available for limited power during the outage. The panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty (for comparison, our copper-bus panel option carries a longer warranty for homeowners who choose that upgrade).
- Breaker Lineup Installed/Updated: 1× 50A standard, 1× 40A standard, 2× 30A double-pole standard, 1× 15A double-pole, 4× 20A standard, 1× 20A GFCI, 1× 15A AFCI, and 13× 15A standard breakers—providing properly sized protection for typical household loads such as ranges, dryers, HVAC equipment, water heaters, EV charging, lighting, and receptacles.
- AFCI/GFCI Code Considerations: As Raleigh inspectors implement NEC 2020, some circuits may require AFCI upgrades. Installing AFCI can expose preexisting wiring issues (for example, shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping and require diagnostic time to resolve.
- Grounding System Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically about 8 ft) and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor from the rod to the main service panel (up to a 25 ft run), improving the home’s grounding and bonding for safer fault clearing.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a panel-mounted device that diverts excess voltage safely to ground, helping protect appliances and electronics from lightning-induced surges, utility fluctuations, or large equipment cycling. This unit carries a 10-year warranty with up to $50,000 of coverage for covered equipment. Coverage is secondary to your homeowner’s insurance and excludes direct lightning strikes; common protected items include major appliances and hardwired systems, while security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Why This Upgrade Matters for Raleigh Homes
A modern 200A service provides capacity for today’s electrical demands—HVAC, EV charging, and high-efficiency appliances—while improving safety with proper grounding, bonding, and circuit protection. The added surge protection helps extend the lifespan of electronics and appliances by limiting damage from everyday voltage spikes.
By bringing this Raleigh, NC home to current code, the system is better prepared for inspections, remodels, and future additions, with clearer labeling and organized circuits that simplify maintenance and troubleshooting.
