200 Amp Panel Upgrade and Outdoor Relocation in Charlotte, NC
Our Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full 200A service upgrade for homeowner Derrick Scott in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project moved the electrical panel outdoors to provide proper working clearance, modernized the service to 200 amps, and brought key components in line with current safety standards. Date completed: May 5, 2026.
This job falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades primary category and Electrical Panel Upgrades as the secondary category—ideal for homes that need added capacity, safer equipment, and a clean, code-compliant layout.
Project Highlights
- Outdoor panel relocation to achieve required working clearance and easier future service.
- New 200A meter/main combo panel with main breaker and feed-through lugs for future expansion.
- All breakers replaced to match circuit loads and current code practices.
- Circuits extended to safely reach the new exterior panel location.
- Grounding system upgraded with ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
- Riser (service mast) replaced and sized for 200A service.
- Permits pulled and utility coordination completed for the service disconnect and meter work.
Breaker and Circuit Upgrades
To ensure a balanced and code-conscious layout, we installed new breakers matched to the home’s existing loads:
- 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits, including bathroom lighting per 2020 code practices.
- 20A standard breakers dedicated to small appliance circuits for kitchens and similar loads.
- 30A double-pole for medium 240V equipment where applicable.
- 40A standard capacity available for larger loads such as dryers, water heaters, condensers, spas, or EV charging where needed.
As part of the relocation, we extended existing circuits to the new panel location, ensuring secure terminations, proper labeling, and clear organization for future maintenance.
Grounding, Riser, and Conduit
A robust grounding electrode system is essential for safety and surge dissipation. We installed ground rods with grounding electrode conductors and verified continuous bonding paths. The service riser was replaced to accommodate the new 200A rating, and exterior routing was protected using appropriately sized 2" PVC conduit with secure fittings and supports.
Where feeder conductors were needed, we utilized appropriately rated conductors (such as THHN 4/0 where applicable) to ensure correct ampacity and durable performance.
Code, Permits, and Inspection Readiness
We handled permits and scheduled the utility power drop to perform the service change safely. As local inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may be required to upgrade certain breakers to AFCI. In older wiring systems, AFCI upgrades can reveal pre-existing conditions (e.g., shared neutrals) that may need correction to prevent nuisance tripping. Our team advises homeowners on these findings and provides clear options to resolve them.
To minimize downtime during major service work, Touchstone Electric can make a temporary generator available for limited power usage upon request.
