Project overview

Our Greenville team completed a comprehensive 200 amp panel upgrade and exterior service disconnect installation in Inman, SC for Servpro - Spartanburg County (MP Restoration LLC). Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project modernized the home’s electrical service, improved protection with AFCI/GFCI technology, corrected garage wiring issues, and verified system capacity with a full load test.

  • Location: Inman, SC
  • Branch: Greenville (serviced from our Taylors location)
  • Completion date: March 31, 2025
  • Primary service: Panels & Service Upgrades

Scope of work completed

  • Installed 200A exterior service disconnect: Brought the service up to current code by adding a dedicated outdoor disconnecting means.
  • Installed 200A interior main breaker panel: Replaced the existing panel and labeled all circuits. With the new outdoor disconnect acting as the service equipment, we separated neutrals and grounds in the interior panel to function correctly as a subpanel.
  • Upgraded circuit protection: Added 6x 15A AFCI, 3x 20A AFCI, and 1x 20A GFCI breakers, plus standard breakers (5x 20A, 2x 30A double-pole, 1x 50A) for major appliances and general circuits. Installed a breaker lock where required.
  • Garage wiring improvements: Rewired the back garage door outlet and three additional garage outlets, repaired the switch leg for the garage light, and installed a new 4’ LED strip fixture for brighter, energy-efficient lighting.
  • Low-voltage repairs: Rewired garage door sensors with new 18/4 low-voltage cable for reliable operation.
  • Feeder and service conductors: Ran new 4-wire SER cable between equipment to provide a dedicated grounding conductor as required.
  • Whole-home load test: Performed to confirm capacity and balanced performance after the upgrade.
  • Temporary power setup: Set a temporary saw pole; generator support was made available for limited power during utility disconnect/inspection as needed.

Code updates and safety benefits

The 2020 NEC requires an exterior disconnecting means. With the new 200A service disconnect installed, the interior panel now operates as a subpanel with neutrals and grounds isolated and a dedicated grounding conductor in the feeder. This configuration enhances fault-clearing performance and overall system safety.

We also upgraded critical circuits with AFCI and GFCI protection. AFCI breakers help mitigate arc-fault fire risks on living-area circuits, while GFCI protects people in damp or outdoor locations. Note that installing AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping and require additional diagnostic time to resolve.

Permitting and inspection were included, and our team coordinated utility shutoff and reinstatement. Limited temporary power support was available to minimize downtime during the switchover.

Garage rewiring and lighting upgrade

Our electricians corrected aging or incorrect wiring methods in the garage by rewiring multiple outlets and the back garage door receptacle, ensuring proper grounding and polarity. We restored the switch leg to the garage light and installed a bright, efficient 4-foot LED strip fixture for improved visibility and lower maintenance. We also replaced and routed low-voltage sensor cabling to keep the garage door system operating dependably.

Quality, documentation, and warranties

  • Panel brought to current electrical code with clearly labeled circuits and proper grounding/neutral separation.
  • Surge protection included with the panel package, featuring a warranty on the protective device.
  • Transferable panel warranty on the installed panel equipment.

Every upgrade was tested and verified through a structured load test and visual inspection checkpoints for a safe, reliable result.
