Completed 200 Amp Panel Upgrade in Bostic, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, completed a full 200 amp meter/panel combo upgrade for homeowner Justin Wenzel in Bostic, NC. The project was completed on December 16, 2024 by our technician Chris Rogers, delivering a safer, more reliable electrical service with room for present and future power needs.

Project Scope and Highlights

This service upgrade included a new outdoor 200A meter/panel combination with permitting and coordination for utility power drop, plus a comprehensive grounding system. We also reworked existing distribution to function as proper subpanels, installed new feeders, and added an RV power solution—everything configured for modern, code-compliant performance.

  • 200A meter/panel combo (outdoor): Installed with permitting and utility coordination, including ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
  • Grounding system: New ground rods installed and bonded with a continuous grounding electrode conductor for improved fault protection.
  • Subpanel reconfiguration: Separation of neutrals and grounds to convert existing panels into compliant subpanels.
  • Feeders for subpanels: New SER 100 amp feeder wire for indoor subpanels and 1/0 AWG feeders where required for capacity and voltage drop considerations.
  • Midsized outdoor subpanel: 12/24 circuit capacity, up to 125 amps, installed to distribute loads efficiently.
  • RV power: Dedicated RV outlet (camper box) with #6 four-wire conductors to support higher-demand recreational equipment.

Breaker Schedule and Load Readiness

All new breakers were supplied and installed to align with the customer’s current usage and future expansion options. The final breaker configuration included:

  • 2 × 100 amp double-pole for subpanel feeds
  • 1 × 60 amp double-pole
  • 1 × 50 amp double-pole
  • 4 × 30 amp double-pole for heavy appliances and HVAC loads
  • 16 × 20 amp single-pole for general-purpose and small appliance circuits

Additional conductors included THHN #6 (25 ft) to serve 60-amp circuits and the #6 four-wire run to the new RV outlet.

Code Compliance and Inspection Readiness

Our team handled permitting and utility coordination to streamline the upgrade process. With authorities increasingly adopting NEC 2020 requirements, some projects may require AFCI breaker upgrades. Because AFCI devices can reveal preexisting wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—troubleshooting may be necessary to bring affected circuits into compliance. We approach these findings methodically to ensure long-term safety and reliability.

Why This Upgrade Matters

A 200 amp service equips homes in Bostic, NC with the capacity to support today’s electrical demands—HVAC, kitchens, EV charging, workshops, and recreational power—without overloading legacy equipment. The new grounding system, properly isolated subpanels, and right-sized feeders all work together to reduce nuisance trips, improve fault-clearing, and enhance overall safety.
