200 Amp Panel Upgrade and Meter Combo Installation in Charlotte, NC

On May 19, 2026, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200 amp service upgrade for homeowner Jackie Garcia in Charlotte, NC. This project combined a new outdoor meter/main combo with a new indoor main panel to deliver more capacity, safer distribution, and clean, code-compliant power for the home.

Scope of Work Completed

  • Meter/Main Combo (200A, over/under with feed-through lugs) installed outdoors to modernize the service entrance and simplify future expansions.
  • Permitting, inspection, and utility coordination handled by our team, including scheduling the power drop and reconnection for a safe, efficient upgrade.
  • Grounding system enhancements with new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors, improving fault protection and overall safety.
  • Indoor 200A main panel replacement in the garage, including reconnection of service conductors, landing and labeling existing circuits, and proper grounding/bonding to current standards.
  • Surge protection added at the main panel to help safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Crew: Lead electricians Dylan Romero and Danny Bishop, with an assisting wireman to ensure a timely, quality installation.

To minimize disruption, we planned the outage window and provided options for limited temporary power if requested. Upon completion, the system was prepared for inspection and homeowner orientation.

Breakers and Circuit Updates

As part of bringing the distribution up to date, we installed and organized new breakers tailored to the home’s loads:

  • 10 × 15A standard breakers for general lighting and standard branch circuits, including bathroom lighting (per current code).
  • 1 × 15A double-pole breaker for designated small-appliance needs.
  • 4 × 20A standard breakers for small-appliance and receptacle circuits.
  • 2 × 30A double-pole breakers for heavier appliances such as a dryer, water heater, or similar equipment.
  • 2 × 40A breakers for larger loads like an air condenser, spa, EV charging, or comparable circuits.
  • 1 × 50A breaker for high-demand equipment such as a range, furnace/air handler, or a small subpanel/EV charger.

The new panel directory was clearly labeled to make future maintenance and additions more straightforward.

Code Compliance and Safety

Our upgrade process aligns with current electrical safety standards, including grounding, bonding, and overcurrent protection best practices. As local inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits during a panel change. In older wiring systems, preexisting conditions—such as shared neutrals—can cause immediate AFCI tripping and may require additional troubleshooting. If that situation arises, our team methodically diagnoses the affected circuits to resolve the issue and keep your installation compliant.

Project Outcome

With the new 200A meter/panel combo and indoor main panel in place, this Charlotte home now benefits from increased capacity, improved reliability, and a cleaner, safer electrical infrastructure. The coordinated permitting, inspection, and utility scheduling helped ensure a smooth experience from start to finish.
