200 Amp Panel Upgrade and Meter Base Replacement in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a full 200A service upgrade for homeowner Richard Arcilesi in Charlotte, NC. On April 15, 2025, our Matthews-based team—Nelson Campos, Alex Bishop, and Danny Bishop—modernized the home’s service equipment to current code, improving safety, reliability, and capacity for future electrical needs.

Project Highlights

  • New 200A meter base: Installed a modern, code-compliant meter base and coordinated the utility power drop. As part of the service upgrade, we installed a new grounding electrode system with ground rods and properly sized grounding electrode conductors.
  • Exterior service disconnect (200A): Added a readily accessible, outdoor main disconnect to align with 2020 code requirements, providing first-line overcurrent protection and an immediate shutoff location for emergency and utility personnel.
  • Indoor 200A aluminum-bus panel: Replaced the aging panel with a new, clearly labeled panelboard. We updated grounding and bonding per code and isolated neutrals and grounds as required with the exterior disconnect configuration.
  • Breaker upgrades and circuit reconnections: Reconnected existing circuits and installed new breakers to match loads and code:
    • 9 x 15A standard breakers for lighting and general-use circuits
    • 6 x 20A standard breakers for kitchen and appliance circuits
    • 2 x 30A double-pole breakers for larger 240V loads
    • 2 x 40A standard breakers for higher-demand equipment
    • 1 x 50A standard breaker for range or similar heavy appliance
  • HVAC integration: Routed the existing A/C conductor into the new panel and set a clean, accessible junction in the crawl space.
  • Targeted wiring improvements: Included up to 30 feet of 10/2 NM-B for 30-amp appliance circuits and installed junction boxes where needed for safe transitions.

All work was completed with permits and inspection coordination, and we label panels clearly for easy future maintenance. For this type of project, our team also coordinates the utility shut-off and, when needed, can provide limited temporary power during the outage.

Code Compliance and Permitting

We filed the electrical permit with the county and performed the upgrade to current standards. As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need specific breaker upgrades (such as AFCI in certain areas). These safety devices can sometimes reveal preexisting wiring conditions—like shared neutrals—that require extra diagnostic work. Our licensed electricians explain options and provide solutions that keep your system compliant and dependable.

If a project requires non-electrical permits (e.g., historic or environmental), we’ll advise on what’s needed and can help you navigate next steps. Our focus is a smooth, transparent process from start to finish.

Why This 200A Upgrade Benefits the Home

  • Capacity for today’s loads: Better support for HVAC, EV charging, kitchen upgrades, and future additions.
  • Safety-first design: Modern service equipment, clear labeling, and robust grounding reduce risk and improve reliability.
  • Surge protection: The panel package includes integrated surge protection for whole-home defense against voltage spikes.
  • Peace of mind: A durable aluminum-bus panel with a transferable manufacturer warranty provides long-term confidence.
