200 Amp Panel Upgrade & Meter Base Installation in Charlotte
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a comprehensive 200 amp service upgrade for homeowner Gary Case in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Brian Cain from our Matthews-based branch, this project modernized the home’s electrical capacity, improved safety with new grounding and surge protection, and added dedicated circuits for today’s power needs. All work was permitted, coordinated with the utility as required, and scheduled for inspection on August 21, 2024.
What We Installed
- Outdoor 200A meter base and indoor 200A main service panel, fully labeled for ease of use.
- Whole-home surge protector to help safeguard appliances and electronics from power surges.
- Upgraded grounding system with grounding electrode conductors and ground rods for code compliance.
- Three (3) new 20A branch circuits and multiple outlets—three receptacles on each of four walls, distributed across three circuits for balanced load.
- Eight (8) recessed can lights with code-compliant junction boxes and supports suitable for open-ceiling conditions.
- NEMA 14-50, 50A outlet installed under the panel—ideal for EV charging or high-demand equipment.
- NEMA 6-20, 240V line (20A) to the far corner for specialty tools or equipment.
- Dedicated circuits for the garage door opener and the home’s A/C equipment (outlet or hardwire as needed).
- Customer-supplied camera/security lights at the front and rear of the home on a dedicated circuit.
- Electrical permit and inspection management from start to finish.
We also verified and maintained proper working clearances. The new panel retains the required 36 inches of clear space in front and allows the door to open at least 90 degrees; cabinetry on the sides is acceptable so long as these clearances are preserved.
Materials and Code-Ready Details
To deliver a reliable, long-lasting result, our team used heavy-duty and code-appropriate materials throughout:
- SER 4/0, 4-wire service entrance cable for the 200A service from meter to panel.
- NM-B Romex 12/2 and 14/2 for new receptacle and lighting circuits, and NM-B 10/2 where higher capacity was needed.
- AFCI 15A breakers added where required for enhanced protection on living-area circuits.
- Standard 20A breakers for small-appliance and general-purpose circuits.
- Meter/panel combo components and grounding hardware installed and bonded per current code.
The finished system improves available capacity for future upgrades while addressing safety, labeling, and organization inside the new panel.
Benefits for the Homeowner
- More capacity and headroom for modern appliances, HVAC, and future additions.
- Improved safety with updated grounding, surge protection, and AFCI where required.
- Convenience from dedicated circuits that reduce tripping and support high-demand loads.
- Better lighting with clean, evenly distributed can lights.
- EV-ready with a new NEMA 14-50 outlet.
