Completed 200 Amp Panel Upgrade and Generator Interlock in Pisgah Forest, NC

Touchstone Electric recently completed a comprehensive panel and generator-ready upgrade for homeowner Andy Broadbent in Pisgah Forest, NC. Led by technician Ben Lively and supported by our Hendersonville branch within the Charlotte business unit, the project was finished on August 8, 2024 with permits and inspection for full code compliance.

Following completion, the customer shared positive feedback about our work and process.

Scope of Work and Key Improvements

  • New 200A main breaker panel (indoor, aluminum): Brought the service up to current electrical code, replaced the panel and main lugs, grounded and bonded the cabinet, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and reconnected existing branch circuits. The new panel was fully labeled for clarity and safety.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Installed a premium surge protector with a $25,000 warranty for connected equipment.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Installed and verified a compliant grounding and bonding system to improve fault-clearing and overall safety.
  • Generator interlock and inlet: Added a manual interlock (lockout) kit at the main panel and an exterior generator inlet to safely power critical circuits during outages. The panel was reworked to position the generator breaker correctly for interlock operation.
  • Dedicated 20A GFCI circuit in the crawl space: Installed a dedicated 20-amp GFCI-protected circuit with three outlets for safe maintenance power and service access.
  • Panel labeling and generator code sticker: Labeled all circuits and coordinated generator labeling with the homeowner for safe operation.
  • Removal of outdated equipment: Removed the existing turn-over switch panel and a separate generator subpanel that were no longer needed with the new interlock system.
  • Permitting and inspection: All work was permitted and inspected for compliance and peace of mind.

The panel replacement required a temporary power shutdown, which was performed safely and efficiently to minimize downtime.

Breaker and Circuit Updates

  • Installed a mix of new breakers to align with current code and household needs:
    • (10) 20-amp standard breakers for small appliance and general-use circuits
    • (10) 15-amp standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits (2020 code considerations for bathroom lighting included)
    • (3) 30-amp double-pole breakers for higher-load equipment such as a dryer, water heater, or HVAC condensing unit
    • (1) Additional 20-amp standard breaker
  • Installed approximately 20 feet of 12/2 NM-B cable to support new 20-amp runs as needed, with junction boxes where appropriate.
  • Installed a standard receptacle with cover (on an existing or new circuit as required by the scope).

Warranties and Ongoing Protection

  • Panel warranty: The new panel includes a 20-year transferrable warranty.
  • Surge protection warranty: Connected equipment coverage up to $25,000 as provided by the installed surge protector.

To maintain long-term safety and reliability, the homeowner enrolled in our Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD, which begins with a comprehensive Home Safety Inspection, including:

  • Panel inspection: voltage checks, bus bar condition, sealed knockouts, proper bonding
  • Testing of safety devices: surge protection, service disconnects, and related equipment
