Project overview: 200 Amp Meter Main Combo & Service Upgrade in Raleigh, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a same-day emergency service upgrade for homeowner Allison Briggs in Raleigh, NC. On August 9, 2024, technician Patrick Burke installed a new 200-amp meter main combo with a full service riser replacement, grounding updates, and surge protection to improve safety, reliability, and capacity for the home.

Scope of work completed

200-amp meter/panel combo installation: New meter/main combo set to consolidate service and simplify future maintenance.
Utility and permitting: Scheduled the power drop with the power provider and pulled required permits.
Service riser replacement: Installed new conduit from the meter to the weatherhead and replaced the riser assembly.
Service entrance cable and drip loop: Ran new service entrance cable up to the end of the drip loop for a clean, code-aligned service connection.
Grounding system: Installed ground rods with grounding electrode conductors for improved safety.
Panel labeling: Clearly labeled the new panel for easy circuit identification.
Whole-home surge protection: Included a $25k Warranty surge protector for added protection of home electronics and appliances.
Temporary power option: Generator availability for limited power usage during the outage upon customer request.

Breakers and circuit readiness

100-amp (2-pole) breaker: Dedicated for a subpanel.
Four 30-amp (double-pole) breakers: Ready for equipment such as a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger.

Note: The base meter/main combo scope does not include the price of additional breakers, feeder and conduit to subpanels (if needed), or an exterior service disconnect unless specified on the job. For this upgrade, the listed breakers were added as part of the final configuration.

Permits, utility coordination, and insurance

Our Raleigh office handled the logistics by coordinating the scheduled power drop with the utility and pulling permits for the upgrade. We also worked directly with the homeowner’s insurance agent and the homeowner to coordinate payment, helping streamline the process from start to finish.
