200 Amp Exterior Panel Upgrade in Matthews, NC
On June 13, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a code-compliant 200A exterior panel upgrade for Sam Smith in Matthews, NC. Led by our technician, Theo Coetsee, this project modernized the home’s electrical service, added essential life-safety devices, and improved outdoor outlet safety—all with permitting and inspection coordinated by our team.
Project Overview
This upgrade replaced the existing outdoor main panel with a new 200 amp panel and brought the system up to current electrical code. We handled all grounding and bonding, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and neatly relabeled circuits for clarity. To minimize downtime, we made a temporary power solution available during the panel changeover.
- New 200A outdoor main panel: Grounded, bonded, and labeled; service conductors and existing circuits reconnected.
- Permitting and inspection: Electrical permit pulled and inspection coordinated as part of the job.
- New breakers installed: 10x 15A standard, 5x 20A standard, 2x 30A double-pole, and 1x 50A standard to support household circuits like lighting, appliances, range, dryer, water heater, and HVAC equipment.
- Life-safety devices: Installed five battery-powered smoke/CO units (a combination of smoke-only and smoke/CO combo detectors) for enhanced whole-home protection.
- Outdoor outlet safety: Replaced exterior receptacles with tamper-resistant, weather-resistant outlets and in-use “bubble” covers.
- Kitchen safety: Replaced an older GFCI in the kitchen with a modern, code-compliant GFCI device.
- Home Safety Membership: Enrolled the home in our Gold Membership, including a detailed electrical safety inspection and ongoing member perks.

- Function checks for Smoke/CO detectors and other home safety systems.
