On April 18, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a comprehensive main panel upgrade for a homeowner in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Chris Rogers, this project brought the home’s electrical system up to current code with a new 200 amp, 40/80‑space panel, updated breakers, and a whole‑house surge protector.

What We Installed
- Main panel replacement (200 amp, 40/80 spaces): We removed the existing equipment and installed a modern indoor main panel with capacity for today’s loads and future circuits. The panel was grounded and bonded, the service entrance conductors were reconnected, and all circuits were clearly labeled to meet current electrical code.
- Breaker updates for code and capacity: We installed a full suite of breakers to properly protect each circuit, including:
- Standard branch circuits: 19× 15A and 7× 20A where appropriate.
- Larger loads: 3× 30A double‑pole (common for EV chargers and similar equipment) and 1× 40A for higher‑demand appliances.
- 6× 15A AFCI breakers to add arc‑fault protection in living areas per modern code requirements, enhancing fire safety.
- Whole‑house surge protection: A panel‑mounted surge protector now diverts excess voltage safely to ground, helping shield appliances and electronics from lightning, utility fluctuations, and switching surges. This device includes a connected‑equipment warranty up to $25,000 as described by the manufacturer.
- Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold: Enrollment includes routine safety checks for smoke/CO detectors, panel health, code updates, and inspection of connections and terminations to help prevent issues before they start.
Power was temporarily disconnected during the panel changeover. For projects like this, our team can provide limited temporary power via generator to keep essentials running during the outage.
