About this 200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Matthews, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200 amp meter/panel upgrade and indoor subpanel installation in Matthews, NC. This project was serviced by technician Will Cruz from our Charlotte branch and wrapped up on May 30, 2025. The work was fully permitted and coordinated with the local power provider to ensure a safe, code-compliant upgrade with minimal downtime for the homeowner.
Scope of Work Completed
- Permits & Utility Coordination: Scheduled the temporary power drop with the utility and handled all required permits and inspections.
- 200A Meter/Main Upgrade: Installed a new meter/panel combo rated for 200 amps to modernize and expand service capacity.
- Grounding System: Drove new ground rods and installed grounding electrode conductors for a robust, code-compliant grounding path.
- 200A Indoor Subpanel: Added a 200 amp indoor subpanel to improve circuit distribution and allow future expansion.
- Feeder Installation: Pulled approximately 30 ft of SER 4/0 (4-wire) feeder cable from the main service equipment to the new subpanel.
- Circuit Transitions: Safely junctioned and extended existing circuits from the former exterior panel in the crawlspace to the new interior panel location.
- New Breakers Installed: 5× 30A double-pole, 1× 40A, 8× 20A, and 3× 15A breakers to organize and protect branch circuits.
Code-Ready and Inspection-Friendly
Our team built this upgrade to align with current NEC requirements implemented by local inspectors. That includes proper service grounding, correct conductor sizing, clearly labeled circuits, and clean wire management for straightforward inspections and future servicing. Where required by the authority having jurisdiction, we evaluate circuits for AFCI/GFCI protection and install protective devices accordingly.
The result is a modernized electrical service with stable capacity for today’s loads and headroom for future projects like kitchen updates, HVAC changes, or EV charging—without the limitations of an undersized panel.
PowerCare Membership for Ongoing Protection
As part of this visit, the homeowner enrolled in our PowerCare Membership, which supports long-term reliability through scheduled checkups and maintenance. This helps keep panels tight, clean, and performing as designed year after year.
- Annual Electrical Safety Check: Visual inspection of service equipment and panel, testing of safety devices, and verification of proper operation.
- Annual Panel Tune-Up: Re-tensioning lugs and breaker terminals, applying antioxidant compound where appropriate, voltage variance testing, cleaning the panel interior, and resealing penetrations.
- Priority Support: Members receive expedited scheduling for service needs.
Proactive maintenance is the best way to extend equipment life, reduce nuisance trips, and catch small issues before they become costly problems.
