200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade and Kitchen Wiring in Charlotte, NC
On January 31, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive 200 amp main breaker panel upgrade and full kitchen rewire for a home in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, the project brought the home’s service equipment and remodeled kitchen up to current code under an electrical permit.
What We Completed
- Furnished and installed a new interior 200 amp main breaker panel in the garage.
- Reconnected the service entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits; updated panel labeling for clarity and future maintenance.
- Grounded and bonded the service per current code and performed a ground rod upgrade with a continuous grounding electrode conductor.
- Included a whole-home surge protector package with a $10k warranty, as specified.
- Provided a temporary generator option for limited power during the panel switchover to reduce downtime.
- Pulled the required electrical permit and coordinated inspection with the authority having jurisdiction.
Kitchen Remodel Wiring to Code
Our team wired the kitchen per the homeowner’s blueprint and current code requirements in Mecklenburg County/Charlotte. Circuits and fixtures included:
- Dedicated circuits for dishwasher/disposal, refrigerator, and range. >Power for the hood fan and all required receptacles placed and spaced to meet code.
- New lighting with eight recessed cans for general illumination and three pendant lights for task and island lighting.
- Receptacles and lighting controls installed and tested to meet current safety and spacing standards.
This remodel ensures the kitchen has adequate, dedicated capacity for modern appliances, reliable lighting, and properly protected outlets where required.
Breakers and Components Installed
As part of the panel change and kitchen circuits, our electricians installed and organized the following breakers to support new and existing loads:
- Standard 15A breakers: 6 total for lighting and standard branch circuits.
- Standard 20A breakers: 10 total for small appliance and countertop circuits.
- Double-pole 15A breaker: 1 unit for specified equipment.
- Double-pole 30A breakers: 2 units (typical uses include dryer, water heater, or HVAC equipment as specified).
- Standard 40A breaker: 1 unit.
- Standard 50A breaker: 1 unit (typical for range or EV-ready capacity as specified).
Note: With the ongoing adoption of NEC 2020 by regional inspectors, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. During consultation, we advised the homeowner that adding AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may require additional troubleshooting to resolve.
Code Compliance, Permitting, and Inspection
Every panel replacement and kitchen rewire we perform in Charlotte is completed under permit and to the most current adopted codes. For this project, we handled permitting, scheduling, and documentation, ensuring the installation meets local and national standards for grounding, bonding, circuit protection, and device placement.
