Completed Project: 200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte team, based out of Matthews, completed a comprehensive 200 amp electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Ada Escobar in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Brian Cain, the work was finished on August 22, 2024, and included bringing the system up to current code, installing new breakers, grounding and bonding, and coordinating permitting and inspection.

This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services, designed to increase capacity, improve safety, and prepare homes for modern electrical needs.

Scope of Work

  • Furnished and installed a new 200A indoor main panel (aluminum bus).
  • Replaced panel and main lugs; clearly labeled the new panel for easy identification and safety.
  • Grounded and bonded the panel; reconnected the service entrance cable and existing circuits.
  • Included a $10k warranty surge protector for added whole-home surge protection.
  • Permitting and inspection handled as part of the project.
  • Power was temporarily disconnected; a generator was made available for limited power during the outage.

Note: The base panel scope does not include breakers, service disconnect, feeder, or meter upgrade (if needed). For this Charlotte project, breakers were provided and installed as listed below to meet the home’s circuits and current code requirements.

The new panel includes a 20-year transferrable warranty. For comparison, our copper panel installation option carries a 50-year warranty.

Breaker Configuration Installed

  • 8 × 15A Standard — bathroom lighting (aligned with 2020 code considerations) and standard branch circuits.
  • 10 × 20A Standard — small appliance circuits.
  • 2 × 25A Standard (Double Pole) — small condenser, well pump, or small mini-split.
  • 1 × 30A Standard (Double Pole) — dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.
  • 1 × 50A Standard — range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.
  • 1 × 60A Standard — range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.
  • 1 × Custom Task: Adjustment — project-specific adjustments to ensure proper fit and function.

Code, Safety, and Inspection

Upgrading to a new 200A panel is about more than capacity—it’s about safety and compliance. For this Charlotte home, our team:

  • Brought the panel to current electrical code with correct grounding, bonding, and labeling.
  • Organized circuits to support reliable operation of appliances and HVAC equipment.
  • Coordinated local permitting and inspection for a smooth, documented installation.
  • Added surge protection to help defend sensitive electronics and major appliances.

Why Upgrade to 200 Amps in Charlotte?

A 200A service provides the headroom modern homes need for kitchen remodels, EV chargers, heat pumps, spas, and future projects—all without constant tripping or overloading. Homeowners benefit from:

  • More capacity for present and future circuits.
