200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Clayton, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a code-compliant 200A electrical panel upgrade for Brock and Amanda McCloskey in Clayton, NC. Led by technician Brad Williams, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, increased capacity for present and future loads, and added multiple layers of electrical safety.
Completed: August 23, 2024 • Category: Panels & Service Upgrades / Electrical Panel Upgrades
What We Upgraded
- New 200A copper main panel (indoor): Brought the panel up to current electrical code, replaced the panel and main lugs, and clearly labeled all circuits.
- Grounding and bonding: Properly grounded and bonded the panel to enhance safety and reduce fault risk.
- Service reconnections: Reconnected the service entrance conductors and tied in existing branch circuits.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protective device to help guard sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Permitting and inspection: Our team handled the permit process and coordinated the required inspection for a smooth, compliant finish.
- Temporary power support: Made a generator available for limited power during the scheduled outage to minimize disruption.
This upgrade delivers reliable capacity for modern household demands like HVAC equipment, kitchen appliances, laundry, and future additions such as a spa or EV charging.
Breaker Configuration Installed
- 13 × 15A Standard Breakers: General lighting and standard branch circuits, including bathroom lighting per current code.
- 3 × 15A AFCI Breakers: Arc-fault protection for 120V receptacles and appliances in areas such as the kitchen, dining, bedrooms, living areas, hallways, and foyers.
- 5 × 20A Standard Breakers: Dedicated small-appliance circuits for kitchens and similar loads.
- 2 × 25A Double-Pole Standard Breakers: Suitable for a small condenser, well pump, or mini-split system.
- 1 × 40A Standard Breaker: Capacity for higher-demand equipment like a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger.
- 1 × 30A Double-Pole Standard Breaker: Additional support for medium-demand equipment such as a dryer, water heater, or condenser.
- 1 × 20A GFCI Breaker: Ground-fault protection for locations such as bathrooms, laundry, garage, exterior/outdoor areas, crawl spaces, and basements.
This mix of standard, AFCI, and GFCI protection aligns the home with modern safety standards and provides the right capacity for a variety of circuits.
Code, Safety, and Reliability Benefits
- Compliance with current electrical code: Up-to-date labeling, grounding, bonding, and breaker protection help ensure safety and inspection readiness.
