200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (based out of our Matthews branch) completed a permitted and inspected 200A main panel replacement for MUSE Residential in Charlotte, NC on October 13, 2025. Lead technician Danny Bishop delivered a code-compliant upgrade that improves safety, reliability, and capacity for present and future electrical needs.

As specialists in Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades, we modernized the home’s service equipment, coordinated the outage, and restored power the same day.

Scope of work

  • Installed new 200A indoor main panel: Brought the service equipment up to current electrical code, grounded and bonded the panel, labeled all circuits, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and tied in existing branch circuits.
  • Breaker replacements: Upgraded protective devices to match load needs and current standards:
    • 13x 15A standard breakers for bathroom lighting and general lighting/outlet circuits
    • 6x 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
    • 1x 30A double‑pole standard breaker for a larger 240V load (e.g., dryer or water heater)
    • 2x 50A standard breakers for heavy 240V loads (e.g., range, furnace, EV charger, or small subpanel)
  • Whole‑home surge protection: Installed a surge protective device that includes a $10,000 connected‑equipment warranty for added peace of mind.
  • Feeder to subpanel: Ran 4/0 SER 4‑wire cable from the new main panel to the existing subpanel to support 200A service and proper neutral/ground separation downstream.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Drove a new ground rod and installed the grounding electrode conductor with listed clamps and secure terminations (max 25 ft GEC run), ensuring proper bonding and fault clearing capability.
  • Outage support: Power was temporarily disconnected during the panel swap. We made a generator available for limited power use during the outage.
  • Permitting and inspection: All work was permitted and inspected in Charlotte, NC for documented code compliance.

Code and safety considerations

Bringing the main panel, grounding, and bonding up to code significantly reduces shock and fire risks while improving system reliability. Clear circuit labeling also makes future maintenance faster and safer.

As local inspectors adopt NEC 2020 requirements, some projects may require AFCI protection on specific circuits. In certain homes, installing AFCI breakers can immediately reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that cause nuisance tripping. Resolving these issues can require additional diagnostic time to locate and correct the problem. Our team explains these scenarios up front so you can make informed decisions.
