200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200 amp service and panel upgrade for a Charlotte home. Led by technician Christian Cedillos from our Charlotte team, this project modernized the property’s electrical infrastructure for today’s power demands and safety standards. Completed in December 2025, the installation included a new indoor 200A main panel with aluminum bus, full breaker replacement, grounding improvements, AFCI/GFCI protection where required, and whole-home surge protection.

Serving Charlotte and the surrounding area from our Matthews location, we handle code-compliant Panels & Service Upgrades with clean workmanship, clear labeling, and permitted, inspected installs.

Scope of Work

  • Upgraded electrical service to 200 amps
  • Installed a new 200A indoor main panel (aluminum bus)
  • Replaced and organized all breakers with proper labeling
  • Added AFCI and GFCI protection where required by current code
  • Upgraded the grounding and bonding system
  • Installed whole-home surge protection
  • Handled permitting and final inspection

The panel was grounded, bonded, and carefully relabeled so each circuit is easy to identify. Power was safely managed during the changeover, and the homeowner now has capacity for modern appliances, HVAC, EV charging, and future additions.

Breaker Lineup and Protection

All circuits were re-terminated with new breakers and updated protection. The lineup included:

  • 1× 30A Standard (single pole): Appliances
  • 1× 20A GFCI: Bathroom, dining, laundry, garage receptacles, exterior/outside, crawl spaces, basements
  • 2× 50A Standard: Range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.
  • 1× 20A Standard (double pole): Small appliances
  • 4× 15A AFCI: 120V receptacles/appliances in kitchen, dining lighting, bedroom/living room receptacles, hallways/foyers
  • 2× 15A Standard: Bathroom lights and standard branch circuits
  • 5× 20A AFCI: Dining receptacles, hallways/foyers, kitchen receptacles not near sink/countertops

Important note on AFCIs: Installing AFCI breakers can immediately trip if a preexisting wiring condition exists (such as a shared neutral). Locating and correcting these issues can require detailed diagnostic time, including opening devices on the affected circuit to isolate the cause.

Code and Safety Upgrades

To align with current code requirements being implemented in the region, our team added AFCI and GFCI protection where applicable, performed a grounding system upgrade, and ensured proper panel bonding. We also labeled all circuits for clarity and performed a tidy, professional installation.

As local inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020 provisions, certain areas of the home may require additional AFCI coverage. If an AFCI trips due to a preexisting wiring condition, we can assist with targeted troubleshooting to restore safe, reliable operation.

Ongoing Care with PowerCare Membership

To keep the new installation in peak condition, the homeowner added our PowerCare Membership. It supports safety and performance through:

  • Annual electrical safety check
  • Annual panel tune-up: re-tension lugs and breaker terminals, apply antioxidant, voltage variance test, vacuum/clean, and reseal penetrations
  • Testing of GFCI devices and disconnects
  • Priority scheduling for service concerns
