Project overview: 200 amp electrical panel upgrade in Matthews, NC
On August 15, 2024, our Charlotte branch completed a code-compliant 200 amp main breaker panel upgrade for homeowner Amy Roberts in Matthews, NC. Lead technician Ben Lively installed a new indoor main panel in the home’s playroom to improve safety, reliability, and capacity for present and future electrical needs.
This project is part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services for homeowners across Matthews.
Scope of work performed
- Furnished and installed a new 200 amp interior main breaker panel; labeled all circuits for clarity.
- Grounded and bonded the panel to current electrical code standards.
- Reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits.
- Installed SER 4/0 (4‑wire) service entrance cable as needed for the new panel.
- Drove a second ground rod to enhance the grounding electrode system.
- Pulled the required electrical permit with the county and coordinated inspection.
To minimize disruption, power was temporarily disconnected only during the switchover. A generator was made available for limited essential power while work was completed.
Breakers and protection installed
To match the home’s circuits and modern protection requirements, our team installed a full set of new breakers, including:
- Standard 15A and 20A breakers for lighting and small-appliance circuits.
- One 20A GFCI breaker for locations that require ground-fault protection (e.g., bathroom, laundry, garage, and exterior receptacles).
- Dedicated double‑pole breakers at 25A, 30A, 40A, and 50A for equipment such as HVAC, water heaters, ranges, spas, and potential EV charging loads.
The new panel includes a whole‑home surge protective device with a $10,000 warranty for added protection. The panel itself is backed by a 20‑year transferrable warranty.
Installing a panel in a finished playroom
Because the panel is located in a finished playroom, careful planning ensured proper working clearances and a clean fit. Where necessary, small sections of drywall were cut to remove the old cabinet and set the new one. Please note: Touchstone Electric’s scope does not include drywall repair or painting around the panel opening.
