200 Amp Electrical Panel Upgrade in Hickory, NC
On June 5, 2025, our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch completed a comprehensive 200 amp electrical panel replacement for Phil Howard in Hickory, NC. Lead technician Christian Cedillos brought the home’s main service up to current code, enhanced grounding and bonding, and prepared the system for present and future electrical demands.
What We Replaced and Upgraded
We removed the aging indoor main panel and installed a new 200A aluminum main panel. As part of the upgrade, we:
- Grounded and bonded the new panel to current electrical standards
- Reconnected the service entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits
- Clearly labeled the new panel for easy circuit identification
- Installed whole‑home surge protection for added equipment protection
- Handled all permitting and coordinated the final electrical inspection
Power is temporarily disconnected during a panel change-out; when needed, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited power use to keep essentials running during the work.
New Breakers Installed for Reliable Distribution
To match the upgraded panel and improve circuit reliability, our team installed a tailored set of breakers, including:
- 2 × 30A double‑pole breakers (commonly used for appliances like dryers, water heaters, condensers, spas, or EV charging)
- 1 × 40A standard breaker
- 1 × 60A standard breaker (ideal for ranges, heat equipment, or small subpanels)
- 1 × 20A double‑pole breaker
- 5 × 20A standard breakers
- 5 × 15A standard breakers
This configuration supports balanced load distribution, reduces nuisance trips, and provides room for future upgrades such as EV chargers or climate control equipment.
Built to Current Code and Ready for Inspections
As our region adopts newer NEC requirements, inspectors may call for upgrades such as AFCI protection on certain circuits. These changes can occasionally reveal preexisting wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals) that require additional diagnosis to correct.
