Project overview

Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200 amp electrical panel upgrade and breaker installation for homeowner Martin Pallazza in Charlotte, NC. The work was performed by technician Chris Rogers and delivered by our Charlotte branch (Matthews) on January 7, 2026.

This upgrade replaced aging equipment with a new 200A aluminum indoor main panel, brought the system up to current electrical code, improved grounding, added whole-home surge protection, and installed appropriately sized breakers for reliable, safe power distribution throughout the home. The project was fully permitted and inspected.

What we upgraded

  • Installed a new 200A aluminum indoor main panel, properly grounded and bonded to meet current code.
  • Reconnected the service entrance cable and landed, organized, and labeled existing circuits for future clarity.
  • Added a whole-home surge protector as specified in the project scope (listed with a $10k connected equipment warranty in the scope of work).
  • Coordinated permitting and inspection for a smooth, compliant completion.
  • Provided temporary generator power for limited use during the planned outage for this project.

Breakers installed for dependable distribution

  • 1 × 60A Double-Pole (typical uses: range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, EV charger)
  • 2 × 50A Double-Pole (typical uses: range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, EV charger)
  • 1 × 30A Double-Pole (typical uses: dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, EV charger)
  • 1 × 15A Double-Pole (as scoped)
  • 1 × 20A GFCI (bath, laundry, garage, exterior/crawl/basement receptacles)
  • 7 × 20A Single-Pole (small appliance/general branch circuits)
  • 13 × 15A Single-Pole (lighting and standard branch circuits)

The final configuration was selected to match existing and anticipated household loads while meeting modern protection requirements.

Grounding and safety improvements

  • Installed a new ground rod (typically driven to approximately 8 ft) and replaced the continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) to the main service panel, within the specified run distance.
  • Ensured the panel was properly grounded and bonded and that terminations were secure and labeled.
  • Upgraded labeling and organization to aid future maintenance and diagnostics.

These upgrades improve fault clearing, reduce nuisance issues, and enhance whole-home electrical safety.

Code and inspection notes for Charlotte homeowners

As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, certain circuits may be required to use AFCI protection. In some homes, adding AFCI can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping until corrected. In those cases, additional diagnostic and corrective work can be needed to isolate and resolve the condition. Our team communicates these findings clearly during inspection-driven upgrades.

Why a 200A upgrade makes sense

A 200 amp panel provides room for today’s and tomorrow’s loads—HVAC, kitchen remodels, home offices, EV charging, and outdoor living spaces—while consolidating protection and improving reliability. For Charlotte homes planning renovations or additions, a modern panel and grounding system helps streamline inspections and reduces future service interruptions.
