About this 200 amp panel and service upgrade in Asheville, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200 amp electrical service upgrade for homeowner Linda Clipp in Asheville, NC. The project was completed on April 19, 2024 by technician Ben Lively from our Charlotte business unit, serving the area through our Hendersonville branch.
This upgrade brings the home’s electrical system up to modern capacity and safety standards, creating room for new appliances and technology while improving overall reliability and protection.
Scope of work
- 200 amp service upgrade: Replaced the main electrical service to increase capacity and improve safety, including a new meter setup, service disconnect, surge protection, grounding, and up to 25 feet of service wire. Power was safely disconnected during the changeover; at the homeowner’s request, a generator can be provided for limited power during the outage.
- New main breaker panel (indoor): Supplied and installed a modern indoor panel with clear circuit labeling and improved organization for future maintenance.
- GFCI protection: Installed a GFCI breaker to enhance shock protection where it’s most needed.
- Grounding and bonding: Installed a new grounding system for proper fault clearing and code compliance.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added surge protective devices at the service to help safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Outdoor 200 amp subpanel: Installed a code-compliant, permitted 200 amp outdoor subpanel to support current and future loads.
- Full Home Safety Inspection: Performed a top-to-bottom review of the home’s electrical system for safety, wear, and code adherence.
- Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold: Enrollment includes periodic checks of smoke/CO detectors, panel safety, code update reviews, and inspection of loose, worn, or deteriorated connections.
- Circuit breakers installed: A balanced mix sized for real-world loads:
- 10 × 15A standard breakers (lighting and general lighting circuits)
- 10 × 20A standard breakers (general-purpose receptacle circuits)
- 1 × 30A double-pole breaker (EV charger or similar)
- 1 × 40A breaker (spa or select HVAC equipment)
- 1 × 50A breaker (range, furnace/air handler, or a small subpanel)
Why upgrade to 200 amps?
- More capacity: Supports modern appliances, EV charging, HVAC equipment, spas, and future renovations.
- Improved reliability: Reduces nuisance tripping and balances loads more effectively across circuits.
- Stronger protection: GFCI and whole-home surge protection help defend people and equipment.
- Future-ready: Organized panels and subpanels make adding circuits faster and more straightforward.
