Project overview
Touchstone Electric completed a 150A meter and main panel replacement for a residential homeowner in Greenville, SC. This overhead service upgrade was planned and executed by our Greenville team out of our Taylors branch and included utility coordination with Duke Energy for a scheduled power drop. The work was completed on January 10, 2025, by technicians Steve Goheen and Tyler Harris.
This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement offerings and was designed to improve safety, reliability, and code compliance for the home’s electrical system.
What we upgraded
- 150A Meter/Panel Combo Replacement: Installed a new 150A meter/panel combination as the service entrance equipment. Our team handled permitting, inspection coordination, and scheduling the overhead power disconnect/reconnect with Duke Energy.
- 150A Indoor Main Panel (Aluminum): Replaced the existing main panel with a 150A code-compliant unit. We grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and properly labeled all circuits for clarity and safety.
- New Grounding System: Drove new ground rods and installed the grounding electrode conductor (GEC), secured all connections with listed clamps, and bonded the grounding system back to the main electrical service per current code.
- Feeder to Subpanel: Installed 10 ft of 4/0 SER (4‑wire) to provide a robust feeder from the main panel to a subpanel, improving distribution capacity and future flexibility.
Code-compliant breakers and circuit organization
As part of the overhaul, we installed and organized breakers to match household needs while aligning with current electrical standards:
- 4× 15A standard breakers: For bathroom lights and standard branch circuits in accordance with 2020 code considerations.
- 12× 20A tandem breakers: To serve small appliance and general-use circuits where appropriate.
- 2× 30A double‑pole breakers: For 240V loads such as a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger (as applicable to the home).
- 1× 40A standard breaker: Reserved for medium 240V equipment, such as HVAC or water heating.
- 1× 50A standard breaker: For higher‑demand loads like a range, furnace/heat strips, small subpanel, or EV charging equipment.
The final layout ensures clear labeling, balanced loading, and a safer, more user-friendly panel for the homeowner.
Safety, code, and inspection readiness
Bringing the service equipment up to modern standards was a primary goal. The new panel was grounded and bonded to a freshly installed electrode system, and all conductors and terminations were secured to manufacturer specifications.
We prepared the installation for inspection under current code cycles, including NEC 2020 considerations. Where inspectors require arc‑fault or other specialized protective devices, our team advises the homeowner on the best path to compliance and long-term safety.
This main panel package includes permitting and inspection coordination. It also includes a surge protector with a product warranty provision and a 20‑year transferrable panel warranty as part of the panel package details. During the temporary outage, our team coordinated the utility drop and offered limited generator support options when needed.
Overhead service and Duke Energy coordination
Because this home uses an overhead utility drop, we scheduled and coordinated with Duke Energy to safely de‑energize and restore power as work progressed. This careful planning minimized downtime and ensured a smooth transition to the new 150A meter/panel combo.
