150A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Sanford, NC

Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade and whole-home surge protection for homeowner Justin Surratt in Sanford, NC. Led by technician Francisco Martinez, this project was completed on June 17, 2025 and included permitting, safety improvements, breaker updates, and warranty-backed equipment.

This service falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades offerings, helping Sanford homeowners stay safe, code-compliant, and protected from damaging power surges.

Scope of Work

  • Permitting and inspection: We pulled the required permit and coordinated inspection to ensure the installation meets current codes.
  • Main electrical panel replacement (150A, indoor): The new panel features an aluminum bus bar with a 20-year transferable warranty. The panel was brought up to current electrical code, grounded and bonded, labeled, and all existing circuits were reconnected along with the service entrance conductors.
  • Whole-home surge protection: Installed a system with a $10,000 equipment coverage / 3-year warranty to help shield the home’s electrical system and connected devices from voltage spikes.
  • Breaker updates for safety and capacity:
    • 1x 100A (2-pole) breaker for a subpanel
    • 1x 50A standard breaker for large loads (range, furnace/heater, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
    • 2x 20A standard (double-pole) breakers for dedicated appliance circuits
    • 5x 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
    • 3x 15A standard breakers for bathroom lighting and standard branch circuits
  • Crew and logistics: A licensed electrician and an electrical apprentice completed the work efficiently. During the planned outage, we make a generator available for limited power usage.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Safety and reliability: A modern, properly bonded and grounded panel reduces risk and improves performance for the entire home.
  • Code compliance: Upgrading the main panel and labeling circuits support current inspection and code requirements.
  • Capacity for modern living: New breakers and balanced circuits better accommodate today’s appliances, HVAC, EV charging, and electronics.
  • Surge protection: Whole-home protection helps defend sensitive equipment from lightning and utility fluctuations.

Inspection and Code Notes

As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 standards, they may require certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI protection. In some homes, preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) can cause immediate tripping when AFCI breakers are installed. Resolving those issues can involve additional diagnostic time to isolate and correct the wiring condition on affected circuits.

Warranties and Peace of Mind

  • Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty: Included with this project for long-term confidence in our workmanship.
  • Panel warranty: 20-year transferable warranty on the 150A aluminum bus panel.
  • Surge protection warranty: $10K equipment coverage with a 3-year warranty on the installed whole-home surge protector.

These protections reflect our commitment to durable results and homeowner peace of mind in Sanford, NC.
