150A Main Panel Upgrade and Breaker Replacement in Charlotte
Completed on September 1, 2026, our Charlotte team replaced an outdoor 150-amp main electrical panel for Donna Black. The project included bringing the service up to current code with proper grounding and bonding, installing whole-home surge protection, and upgrading branch-circuit breakers. All work was performed under a county electrical permit with inspection.

Scope of Work
- Permitting: Filed the required electrical permit with the county. Note: Non-electrical permits (e.g., Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, Builders, or separate subcontractor permits) are not included and may be needed depending on jurisdictional rules.
- Power Coordination: Safely disconnected power to complete the panel change. A generator was made available for limited power use during the outage.
- Panel Replacement: Removed the existing outdoor main and installed a new 150A aluminum-bus outdoor-rated panel. We labeled the new panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and reconnected the existing branch circuits.
- Grounding and Bonding: Grounded and bonded the panel to current code for improved safety and system performance.
- Surge Protection: Installed whole-home surge protection as part of the panel package, which includes a $10,000 warranty surge protector.
- Breaker Upgrades: Replaced and standardized breakers to match current usage and code requirements:
- 9× 15A standard breakers — typical for lighting and general-purpose circuits.
- 7× 20A standard breakers — common for kitchen and small-appliance circuits.
- 3× 30A double-pole breakers — often used for dryers, water heaters, condensers, or spas.
- 1× 50A standard breaker — suitable for ranges, furnaces, subpanels, or EV charging.
Code Compliance and AFCI Considerations
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may be required to upgrade specific circuits to AFCI protection. In older wiring systems, AFCI breakers can trip immediately due to preexisting conditions like shared neutrals. When that occurs, additional diagnostic time may be required to locate and correct the issue. Our team discusses these possibilities in advance so there are no surprises during inspection.
