125A Subpanel Installation in Charlotte, NC — Project Overview

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a safe, code-compliant 125 amp subpanel installation for Timber Ridge Apartments in Charlotte, NC. The project was handled by technicians Danny Bishop and Robert Sloan from our Charlotte branch and was completed on November 21, 2025. This capacity upgrade provides room for present and future circuits while aligning with current electrical code requirements.

What We Installed

To deliver a reliable and expandable system, our team furnished and installed a new subpanel configured for 125A service capacity and added a mix of standard and GFCI protection where appropriate.

  • New Subpanel (Indoor): Professionally installed and set up for a 125A capacity upgrade. Includes permitting; excludes conduit/feeder/trenching, surge protection, and separate grounding systems for detached structures.
  • Electrical Permit: Filed the electrical permit with the county as required for this scope.
  • Breakers Installed:
    • 4× 15A Standard Breakers — for bathroom lighting and standard branch circuits (per 2020 code updates).
    • 1× 20A GFCI Breaker — for spaces such as bathrooms, dining, laundry, garage receptacles, exterior, crawl spaces, and basements.
    • 3× 20A Standard Breakers — for small appliance circuits.
    • 1× 25A Standard Double-Pole — suitable for a small condenser, well pump, or mini-split.
    • 1× 30A Standard Double-Pole — typical for a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger.
    • 1× 50A Standard — often used for a range, furnace/air handler, small subpanel, or EV charger.
    • 1× 60A Standard — additional capacity for larger appliances or equipment where applicable.
  • Onsite Assistance: Additional helper support to keep the project efficient and organized.

The result is a clean, organized subpanel with properly matched breakers to support both everyday loads and future electrical needs.

Permitting and Code Compliance

As a licensed residential electrical contractor, Touchstone Electric secures the required electrical permit for panel and subpanel work in Charlotte, NC. Please note, every jurisdiction may require different permits for certain projects. The permit included here covers electrical only; non-electrical permits (such as Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, or Builder-related permits) are not included. If additional non-electrical permits are needed, we advise on next steps and can provide pricing to process them.

NEC 2020 and AFCI Considerations

Local inspectors are increasingly enforcing NEC 2020 requirements. In some cases, this can include upgrading certain circuits to AFCI breakers. When AFCI protection is added, it may immediately trip if there is a preexisting wiring condition—such as a shared neutral—on the circuit. Resolving issues like shared neutrals can require detailed diagnostics, which may involve tracing and isolating affected devices or fixtures on the circuit. Our team explains these possibilities upfront so you know what to expect if an inspector calls for AFCI upgrades during your project.

Why This Upgrade Benefits Charlotte Properties

  • Added Capacity: A 125A subpanel provides room for additional circuits as your property’s needs grow.
  • Targeted Protection: GFCI protection where required enhances safety in moisture-prone areas.
  • Future-Ready: Supports modern loads such as EV charging, mini-splits, updated appliances, and outdoor equipment.
  • Code-Aligned: Built to current standards for a safer, more reliable electrical system.

Whether you manage a multifamily community or own a single residence, a properly sized and permitted subpanel helps keep your electrical system organized and scalable.
