Professional 125A Meter Base & Service Replacement in Hodges, SC

Touchstone Electric recently completed a comprehensive meter base and service upgrade for a homeowner in Hodges, SC. This Panels & Service Upgrades project, categorized under Meter Base & Service Replacement, was completed on October 7, 2024 by our technician Tyler Harris with support from our Greenville branch based in Taylors.

Project Overview

Our customer, Joseph Williams, needed a reliable, code-compliant replacement for an aging 125-amp service. We removed the existing equipment and installed a new 125A meter base, a riser with a weatherhead, and a properly sized service entrance cable to the main panel. All equipment was carefully mounted, labeled, and secured for safety and long-term performance.

  • 125A Meter Base Replacement: Installed a new meter base and coordinated the utility power drop and reconnection to minimize downtime.
  • New Riser and Weatherhead: Added a clean, weather-tight overhead service entry, complete with proper drip loop for water shedding.
  • 2/0 SER (4-wire) Feed to Main Panel: Ran approximately 60 feet of 2/0 SER from the meter to the main panel to support the 125A service.
  • Conduit and Fittings: Installed and secured about 10 feet of 2-inch PVC conduit from the meter up to the weatherhead, including connectors and fittings as required.
  • Grounding System: Drove ground rods and installed grounding electrode conductors to ensure a safe, low-impedance path to earth.
  • Permits and Inspection: Pulled the electrical permit with the county and prepared the installation for inspection and utility reconnection.

To further streamline the process, our team scheduled the utility power drop in advance and ensured all components met current code requirements and local standards.

Why This Service Upgrade Matters

  • Safety: A new, properly grounded meter base and riser reduce risks from corrosion, loose connections, and weather intrusion.
  • Reliability: Modern conductors and secure terminations help prevent nuisance outages and voltage drops.
  • Code Compliance: Up-to-date equipment and correct conductor sizing keep homes aligned with NEC and local regulations.
  • Future-Ready: A refreshed service is a smart foundation for future panel work, EV charging, or home remodels.

If requested, Touchstone Electric can make a generator available for limited power usage during the scheduled outage to keep essentials running while we work.

Permitting and Jurisdiction Notes

As part of this project, we handled the electrical permit with the county. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction, and some projects may also need non-electrical permits (such as zoning, historic preservation, or environmental permits). Those non-electrical permits are not included by default; if they’re needed, we’ll let you know what to obtain or can provide pricing to process them on your behalf.
