125 Amp Subpanel Installation in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a 125 amp copper bus subpanel upgrade for Richard Flentie in Charlotte, NC. This panel and service upgrade project created additional capacity for branch circuits while providing an organized, code-conscious electrical distribution point supplied from the home’s main panel.

Our Charlotte team, including Zion Brownlee, Anthony Vazquez, and Mark Alaev, installed the new indoor subpanel and ran a new feeder from the main electrical panel. The work included electrical permitting to support a properly documented installation.

New Feeder Wire From the Main Panel

A subpanel depends on a correctly sized feeder to deliver power safely and reliably from the main service equipment. For this project, our electricians installed approximately 30 feet of four-wire 1/0 SER feeder cable between the main panel and the new subpanel.

This feeder upgrade supports the 125 amp subpanel and helps provide room for the home’s electrical needs. A dedicated subpanel can be a practical solution when an existing panel is crowded, when new circuits are needed, or when specific areas and equipment benefit from a more organized electrical layout.

Breakers and Circuit Accommodations

As part of the subpanel installation, the project included a range of breakers to accommodate standard 15 amp and 20 amp branch circuits as well as 30 amp and 50 amp double-pole applications. The work also included a 15 amp GFCI breaker and wire provisions for applicable higher-demand equipment and appliance circuits.

Electrical panels and breakers must be selected and installed according to the demands of the circuits they serve. Our team evaluates panel capacity, feeder requirements, breaker compatibility, and circuit configuration to help ensure the completed work aligns with the scope of the project and applicable inspection requirements.

Permit Included and Inspection Considerations

An electrical permit was included with this Charlotte subpanel upgrade. Permitting is an important part of many panel, feeder, and service-related projects because it helps provide a path for inspection of the completed installation.

As NEC 2020 requirements are implemented, inspectors may require certain existing circuits to receive AFCI protection. AFCI breakers can sometimes trip immediately when a pre-existing wiring condition is present, such as a shared neutral. If that occurs, additional diagnostic work may be needed to identify and correct the underlying condition. Touchstone Electric communicates these potential considerations so homeowners can make informed decisions about panel upgrade work.

Planning for a Temporary Power Outage

Electrical panel and feeder work requires careful coordination, and temporary power interruption may be necessary while electricians make safe connections and complete the installation. For this project, the homeowner was advised to prepare for an outage during the work.

Before scheduling a panel or subpanel installation, homeowners should plan for affected appliances, electronics, internet equipment, and other systems that rely on household power. Our electricians work methodically to complete the required electrical work while prioritizing safe procedures throughout the project.
