Code-Compliant Subpanel and Outlet Upgrades in Davidson, NC

On May 9, 2025, our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch completed a clean, code-compliant 100A subpanel installation and outlet upgrades for homeowner Donna Bartolf in Davidson, NC. Lead electrician Christian Cedillos handled the installation, permitting, and final setup to ensure safe, reliable capacity for new and existing loads.

This project expanded available circuits with a midsize indoor subpanel, protected wiring in EMT conduit, and practical outlet additions—including a dedicated TV outlet, a GFCI receptacle, and a standard receptacle—to support everyday power needs.

What We Installed

  • Midsize indoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Installed as a 100A subpanel for future-ready expansion. This subpanel scope included permitting; conduit, feeder, and breakers were specified and installed as separate line items.
  • 100A 2‑pole breaker: Feeds the new subpanel for dependable distribution.
  • 1/0 XHHW stranded conductors (120 ft): Durable feeder wiring suited for conduit and challenging locations for long-term performance.
  • 1/2" EMT conduit (30 ft): Professionally mounted with connectors and fittings to provide a protected, code-compliant pathway.
  • #12 THHN branch circuit wiring (30 ft): Appropriate for 20‑amp circuits serving outlets and small appliances.
  • 20A standard breaker: For the new branch circuit load.
  • GFCI receptacle with cover: Adds shock protection where required by code or best practice.
  • Standard receptacle with cover: Adds convenient, safe access to power.
  • Dedicated TV outlet: Clean power location for media equipment.

The result is a neat, serviceable subpanel with protected feeders and clearly labeled circuits, offering plenty of room for future additions without overloading the main panel.

Safety, Code, and Inspection

Our team installed this system to current standards and secured the required permits for the subpanel work. As local jurisdictions continue adopting the 2020 NEC, inspectors may require existing breakers on certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI. Installing AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping and require diagnostic time to resolve. If an inspector requests AFCI upgrades, we’ll explain options and next steps so you know exactly what’s needed for compliance.

Benefits for the Home

  • Added capacity: The 100A subpanel creates space for new dedicated circuits as needs grow.
  • Safer power distribution: EMT and properly sized feeders protect conductors and reduce hazards.
  • Convenience where it counts: A TV outlet and new receptacles put power exactly where it’s needed.
  • Shock protection: The GFCI receptacle adds an extra safety layer in areas where protection is recommended or required.
