100A Subpanel and Surge Protection Project in Stanley, NC

On October 17, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte business unit, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive panel upgrade for homeowner Colleen Duncan in Stanley, NC. Lead technician Chris Rogers installed a 100-amp subpanel, whole-house surge protection, new breakers, a SER feeder, and a refreshed grounding system to improve safety, capacity, and reliability.

This project was part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Subpanel Installation services, designed to support present loads and make room for future circuits and home improvements.

Scope of Work Completed

  • 100A indoor subpanel (12/24 spaces) professionally mounted, labeled, and phase-balanced for stable distribution.
  • Whole-house surge protector installed at the service equipment to divert harmful voltage spikes safely to ground. Product includes appliance coverage up to $10,000 for three years (per product documentation).
  • New breakers throughout the installation:
    • 7 single-pole 20A breakers
    • 4 double-pole 20A breakers
  • #2 SER, four-conductor feeder (approximately 10 ft) to supply the subpanel with a robust, code-compliant connection.
  • Grounding system upgrade including driving new ground rod(s), bonding with a grounding electrode conductor, and securing all terminations at the service equipment. Conductor routing was kept efficient and connections were clamped and torqued to spec.

These upgrades strengthen overcurrent protection, improve power quality, and help safeguard appliances and electronics against transient events.

Why This Upgrade Matters for Stanley Homes

A dedicated 100A subpanel helps reduce nuisance tripping, distributes loads more evenly, and creates room for expansions such as kitchen remodels, HVAC additions, a workshop, or EV charging. The whole-house surge protector provides a critical first line of defense against lightning-induced surges, utility switching events, and equipment cycling—helping extend the life of electronics and appliances.

Together, these improvements enhance day-to-day reliability and position the home for safe, future-ready electrical use.

Code, Safety, and Quality Details

  • All terminations were torqued to manufacturer specifications and circuits were clearly identified for the homeowner.
  • Feeder and grounding conductors were routed neatly, secured at proper intervals, and bonded where required for a continuous, low-impedance fault path.
  • Grounding electrode work followed best practices—driving rod(s) to appropriate depth and keeping the grounding electrode conductor run efficient and protected.

As local jurisdictions continue to adopt NEC 2020, inspectors may require AFCI protection on certain branch circuits. In some homes, adding AFCI can expose preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may require additional diagnostic work to resolve. Our team communicates these findings clearly and provides code-compliant solutions.
