Subpanel Installation and Feeder Upgrade in Hays, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a Panels & Service Upgrades project in Hays, NC, delivering a clean, code-focused Subpanel Installation for homeowner Brian Kilby. Led by technician Chris Rogers from our Charlotte branch, this job was finished on September 27, 2025 and included a new 100 amp Eaton breaker, trenching and backfill, and a dedicated 20 amp circuit for small appliances.

Project at a Glance

  • Category: Panels & Service Upgrades – Subpanel Installation
  • Location: Hays, NC (serviced by our Charlotte branch based in Matthews)
  • Main Equipment: 100 amp Eaton 2-pole breaker for subpanel
  • Feeder: 80 ft of direct-burial mobile home feeder cable
  • Trenching: 50 ft at approximately 18–24 inches depth with trench rental and backfill
  • Added Circuit: New 20 amp standard circuit for small appliances

What We Installed

We placed a 100 amp Eaton breaker to supply a properly sized subpanel, ensuring reliable capacity for present and future electrical needs. To feed the new location, our team ran 80 feet of direct-burial mobile home feeder, selected for its durability and suitability for underground service. This wiring approach provides a robust path from the main service to the subpanel while keeping conductors safely protected underground.

To support everyday power needs, we also installed a 20 amp standard breaker dedicated to small appliances. This dedicated circuit helps reduce nuisance trips, balances loads, and adds flexibility for future device use within the space.

Professional Trenching and Site Restoration

The project required 50 feet of trenching at approximately 18–24 inches in depth to meet typical underground wiring practices. We utilized a trench rental to complete the excavation efficiently and performed backfill to restore the area after the feeder was laid. As with all excavation, calling 811 before digging is required to mark utilities and keep the site safe.

Our crew included an experienced electrician and an electrical apprentice to keep the workflow smooth, safe, and on schedule from layout and trenching to conductor placement and final terminations.

Code-Focused Workmanship and Clean Finish

Every connection, breaker selection, and underground routing was completed with attention to current electrical standards and best practices. Properly sized overcurrent protection, a clearly labeled subpanel feed, and a dedicated appliance circuit work together to deliver a safe, dependable system that’s easier to service and expand down the road.

This approach helps reduce voltage drop concerns over longer distances, protects conductors in the soil environment, and supports consistent performance for household loads.
