On June 5, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (based in Matthews) completed a turnkey 100 amp subpanel and trench-fed feeder installation in Concord, NC for homeowner Chris Elrod. Lead technician Christian Cedillos installed an outdoor-rated 100A subpanel to power a new she‑shed, added a matching 100A Eaton CH breaker at the main service, trenched for the underground feeder, and set up a dedicated grounding system for the detached structure.

What we installed
- 100A Eaton CH two‑pole breaker: A compatible main-panel upgrade to supply the new subpanel safely and reliably.
- Outdoor 100A main‑lug subpanel (12/24 spaces): Room for present needs and future expansion in the she‑shed, with clear circuit labeling and tidy wire management.
- Direct‑burial feeder: Approximately 160 feet of underground‑rated feeder cable to power the detached structure without requiring conduit over the trench run.
- SER #2 (4‑wire) cable: Appropriately sized conductors used for the subpanel feed connections where SER is applicable.
- Grounding system for a separate structure: Driven ground rod(s) and a grounding electrode conductor, with neutrals isolated from grounds in the subpanel as required for detached buildings.
- Trenching and backfill: About 155 feet of trench at an 18–24 inch depth, then carefully backfilled and the work area cleaned.
- Skilled crew: Lead electrician supported by a wireman helper to ensure a neat, code‑minded installation completed efficiently.
Why a 100 amp subpanel for a she‑shed?
A dedicated 100A subpanel gives a detached space robust, flexible power. It supports lighting, receptacles, HVAC or dehumidifiers, hobby tools, and additional outdoor circuits without overloading the home’s main panel. The new subpanel in this Concord project provides multiple open spaces for future additions, helping the homeowner adapt as needs change.
Running a properly sized, four‑wire feeder improves safety and performance. Grounding, separation, and safety details
Detached structures require their own grounding electrode system. For this she‑shed, we drove new ground rod(s) and bonded them with a grounding electrode conductor. Inside the outdoor subpanel, the neutrals remain isolated from the equipment grounds—an essential detail for detached buildings.
All equipment and wiring are rated for their environment, and the underground feeder was buried at an appropriate depth for protection. These measures align with national and local electrical standards in Concord, supporting long‑term reliability and safety.
